Obsolescense of a BA?

Posted on 8/06/2007 by Rajeev Singh

For a lot many years we have now been witnessing that there are jobs that just go away. They are either obsolete or have grown so much in role responsibility that many new jobs have spun out of the original. I mean, who around us sees a milkman anymore and we all know what ever happened to the 'webmaster' of the 90's. Just a few days ago, John Berry, a Senior Consultant from Cutter Consortium talked about The Vanishing IT Organization in one of his articles. He talks about the IT organization ceasing to operate and exist as a clearly defined structure with its own office door. That made me think - when will the job of a BA cease to exit? How long do the BAs have before they should start planning their transition into some thing else where they might be useful? I encourage you to give this a thought and post your opinions on it. In my office business analyst is already obsolete. Now they look for an IT analyst which can be a cross between an IT analyst and a tech lead. It actually works very well due to the offshore model

I don't think the Business Systems Analyst role will be obsolete any time soon. The opposite is actually the case - the Business Systems Analyst is gaining a more prominent role in the business & IT landscape.

The name may change, and specialisations may grow out of the one generic name, but I think as long as companies are running change and transforamtion projects they'll need someone to analyse he current stae and to plan for the future.

I do think the job will grow away from technology though. Which kind of makes it future proof.

The BA will only get stronger and more visible with business and IT projects. The future looks bright indeed for BA's. Don't worry.
